Fun and Desensitisation

Having fun while exploring foods is critical!! Building positive experiences around food helps reduce fear therefore helping your child expand their diet.

  • Create food art

  • Have competitions rolling, blowing or squishing foods

  • I never expect them to eat (no pressure but they can eat if they choose to!)

Routine of the session:

  • Lay out plates/equipment

  • Food exploration one at a time (7-10 foods per session)

Role of parent/ carer

For feeding therapy to work best, Parents/Carers need to be involved as well... in the session and at home!

During Sessions:

  • Join in therapy session

  • Be a role model

  • Learn phrases to support your child's eating

  • Learn how to avoid pressure

  • Do not expect your child to eat any foods - just join in the fun of the session and see what happens!

At Home:

  • Follow through on what is learned during the sessions

  • Learn how to set up structure and routine

  • Learn how to offer food - texture, nutrition and other sensory needs for your child's success

Communication is essential between us - I value your input at all times and will adjust my approach to suit you and your child.

What is SOS Feeding Therapy?

SOS Approach to Feeding is "Sequential Oral Sensory" Approach - this means in a step by step approach, foods are introduced in a fun and playful way to desensitise the child to the food.  This essentially helps them accept foods that are new or were previously liked but now dropped.

There are 6 major steps to eating: Tolerating, Interacting with, Smelling, Touching, Tasting and Eating. Within each of these steps are smaller steps that we aim to help the child move through.

WHO

  • Fussy eaters and Problem Feeders

  • Children with ASD and/or ADHD or ARFID diagnoses

  • Children with Sensory Processing Disorders

AGE

  • Under 6 years old - typically food play will be the dominant strategy

  • ~6 - 13 years old - food explorer or food scientist approach or cooking

  • Adolescents - food scientist and cooking lessons

  • Note: the approach to food is ultimately determined by the child's intellectual age and current level of food skill

INDIVIDUAL OR GROUP?

  • Currently, I only offer individual therapy sessions. This can be at your home or in my clinics.

  • Evidence shows groups are very effective as well so watch this space as I develop a program and find a location that is suitable.

EVIDENCE

  • The SOS approach to feeding has been researched and found effective for supporting families and their children in making progress in expanding amounts and types of food in the diet.

  • See the SOS website for more information and study details.

  • Also please watch the Parent/Carer workshop for an excellent introduction to why children don't eat and the SOS Approach to Feeding.
